Wikipedia as a Printed Book - Seriously!

The English edition of Wikipedia Encyclopedia contains around 3 million articles as of now and if someone were to print the entire Wikipedia encyclopedia into a book, the size of that book would roughly be equivalent to 952 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Not sure if anyone is willing to go that far but a student in UK has actually converted 0.01% of the Wikipedia encyclopedia into a printed book. See some pictures below:

wikipedia book

This Wikipedia book has some 5,000 pages and it’s a compilation of 400+ featured articles all picked from Wikipedia. And, as you can easily make out from the photographs, the book is huge - it’s about 1ft 7in. high or just as tall as a 30" widescreen monitor.

wikipedia printed

The more interesting part is that, Rob Matthews, who came up with this idea of printing Wikipedia, also has plans to sell this book according to Telegraph.

!!!BE careful in saying HELLO!!!

Hello... " When you try to call someone through mobile phone, don't put your mobile closer to your ears until the recipient answers Because directly after dialing, the mobile phone would use it's maximum signaling power, which is: 2watts = 33dbi Please Be Careful Message as received ( Save your brain ) Please use left ear while using cell (mobile), because if you use the right one it will affect brain directly. This is a true fact from Apollo medical team (though you may cross-check). Please forward to all your well wishers

Why does a Virus/Spyware/Adware keep coming back???

Has it ever happened with you ?

You scan your computer for viruses, spyware and adware, the software you use finds them and then you remove or quarantine them, but after some time when you again scan you see that the same virus or spyware or adware has been again found by your software. This happens repeatedly, even though you carefully delete the virus or spyware from your system,it does come back again? Now the question is that why does this happen?

Well the reason behind this is the feature in Windows Xp called System restore.Seems very simple but it isnt. What system restore does is that it saves a copy of the virus/spyware even though you delete it.So the virus tends to come back again.I have personally experienced this problem.By defalut system restore is enabled in Windows Xp(both hame and professional).
Now the question arises that what should one do ?Turning off system restore permanently is NOT a good option as it can help in odd times.
The solution is to turn off system restore temporarily and then perform your virus or spyware scan. After scanning and removing the virus turn it on again.Yes this is the right way.It really helps a lot.You can see the result yourself.
Try this if you have ever installed a toolbar or search engine or dialer which you are unable to remove.
Just follow the steps below before performing the virus/spyware scan:
1.Right click on My computer,go to properties.
2.Under the System restore tab put a tick on 'Turn off system restore on all drives'.
3.Press Apply.Then restart your Pc.
4.Now perform the scan, remove the virus or spyware(or quarantine it).
5.Now Turn on system restore again.

Firefox Hacks,Tweaks,Extensions and Optimizations! ! !

First of all let me answer a very common question. Then i will talk about the Hacks and optimizations.

Q.What is Firefox and why should an internet surfer use it ?Ans.Firefox is the award-winning, free Web browser which is better than most of its competitors today. You can browse the Web with confidence - Firefox protects you from viruses, spyware and pop-ups. Some outstanding features of firefox are:

A Better Web Experience
Firefox 1.5 has an intuitive interface and blocks viruses, spyware, and popup ads. It delivers Web pages faster than ever. And it’s easy to install and import your favorites. Packed with useful features like tabbed browsing, Live Bookmarks, and an integrated Search bar, Firefox will change the way you experience the Web, for the better.

Faster Browsing
Enjoy quick page loading as you navigate back and forward in a browsing session. Improvements to the engine that powers Firefox deliver more accurate display of complex Web sites, support for new Web standards, and better overall performance.

Automatic Updates
The new Software Update feature makes it easy to get the latest security and feature updates to Firefox. Firefox automatically downloads these small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed.

Tabbed Browsing
Use
tabbed browsing to open multiple Web pages in a single browser window, and quickly flip back and forth. Drag and drop open tabs to keep related pages together.

Improved Pop-up Blocking
Firefox’s built-in pop-up blocker has been enhanced to block more unwanted pop-up and pop-under ads.

Integrated Search
Tap into the power of the Web’s most popular search engines with the
built-in Search bar, and easily add new engines.

Stronger Security
Firefox keeps you more secure when you’re browsing the Web, closing the door on spyware, worms, and viruses. The Firefox community of developers and security experts works around the clock to monitor security issues and release updates to better protect you.

Clear Private Data
Protect your privacy with the new Clear Private Data tool. With a single click, you can delete all personal data, including browsing history, cookies, Web form entries and passwords.

Live Bookmarks
Stay up to date with your favorite Web sites and blogs. Use
Live Bookmarks that update themselves automatically with the latest content from the Web.

Customize Firefox
Select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.

Firefox Hacks,Tweaks,Extensions and Optimizations

1.Minimize Hack
The first hack that I have here is the popular Firefox Minimize Hack that has recently flashed through the internet. The purpose of this hack tries to keep Firefox from eating up your physical RAM and instead puts the burden on your hard drive, or at least that is the general reason behind it. To implement this hack, perform the following steps.

1. With Firefox up and running, type about:config and hit enter.

2. Right click on the new page and select New -> Boolean.

3. In the pop-up window, type in “config.trim_on_minimize” without quotes and hit enter.

4. In the next pop-up window, select True and hit enter.

5. Restart your browserResult:With that done, open up a bunch of tabs and monitor the memory usage.
In my first run without this hack, Firefox was using 137.8 Mb of Ram. With all 30 tabs open again, Firefox was using 118.4 Mb, but when minimized this dropped to an astounding 4 Mb. However, this was too good to be true, I left Firefox minimized and came back 12 minutes later and the memory use had slowly creeped up to 42.4 Mb. While this was 10 times larger than the initial 4.2 Mb, I was still saving about 75 Mb.

2.Network Hack
This next group of hacks all relate to the network.http group in about:config. Basically these various options open up your network connection to Firefox, permitting it to access information online as quickly as your connection will permit you. Since the majority of readers utilize broadband connections, this will benefit you, but people using dial up modems (56k) this is not going to benefit you much, sorry. To implement these hacks, perform the following steps.

1. With Firefox up and running, type about:config and hit enter.

2(a). Find the entry called “network.http.pipelining” and set it to “true”.

2(b). Find the entry called “network.http.proxy.pipelining” and set it to “true”.

2(c). Find the entry called “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and set it to 16-32, but beware, if set too high you may risk banning yourself from various servers by being mistaken for a DoS attack.

3. Restart your browser.Result:With these options enabled, webpages load faster, pictures in particular. When I went to Flickr.com and started clicking around, all the pictures loaded at one time unlike how it used to load one picture at a time.

3.Download Manager Hacks
This next group of hacks deal with the download manager in Firefox. For those of you that don’t use the Firefox download manager, skip this section. I don’t know about you, but I personally hate the download manager, it is annoying and generally a distraction when it pops up with its messages and warning, so, let us do away with it.
Follow these steps to tweak/destroy your manager.

1. With Firefox up and running, type about:config and hit enter.

2. Take your pick of the following attributes to modify.

3(a). browser.download.manager.show
Alert Interval at default shows the alert message for 2000 milliseconds or 2 seconds. I personally set it to 500 milliseconds; all I need is a quick blurb telling me my download is done.

3(b). browser.download.manager.open
Delay at default opens up the download manager immediately, which can be a big pain if you are downloading 10Kb files to your desktop, you don’t need that annoying manager to pop up. I have this guy set on 30,000 milliseconds or 30 seconds. If a file is larger than 30 seconds of download time, I might want to watch its progress.

3(c). browser.download.manager.closeWhenDone at default is set to false so that your manager doesn’t close itself. I set it to true just to get this thing out of the way the moment it is done, I like to watch progress, but I don’t need to waste space or the time to close it.

3(d). browser.download.manager.flashCount at default flashes the download manager icon in your taskbar for 2 seconds, I prefer zero seconds to reduce annoyance, adjust to your own preference.

4. Restart your browser.Result:This last hack is less of a hack and more of a good habit you should pick up. I tend to clear my cache and download list at least once a week, sometimes more often. This will usually increase performance and it will also update all content.

Extensions
Extensions are what make Firefox great, you can customize to your hearts content by adding extensions. The following list are the extensions that are useful.
Fission
This extension places a page status bar over the address bar which creates a cool effect and also lets you know how much of the page is left to download. Useful for slower connections and just plain cool.

Reveal
This is definitely the coolest extension I have seen. You know that cool thing that OSX does that lets you view all your currently open programs in little thumbnails? Well this does the same thing, but for your tabs! When I am writing an article, coding CS, or doing something else that requires lots of back and forth movement, this saves me a lot of time from having to ctrl-tab or click on tabs. To get to know reveal, take the quick 30 second tutorial that prompts you upon restart. I highly recommend this extension.
Gmail Space
Who likes free online storage? I do and I’m sure you do too. This extension turns those 2+GB that Google has given to each of their users into 2GB of online storage. I find this as a great way to transfer files between computers with no need for a jump drives. While I don’t know how secure this extension is, I find it nice when I don’t want to carry a jump drive around, but nothing beats having a FTP server.
IE Tab
This causes Firefox to render a page with an embedded Internet Explorer within your Firefox window. I use this specific extension whenever a page renders terribly in Firefox. I wish they made an extension for Safari that would let you guys render my page in Firefox, sorry! Very useful when a page loads terribly. Be warned though, IEtab has a known memory leak but they are working on fixing it.
Tab Mix Plus
This extension was called in by Stu and it offers even more features than TabX and Fission. It puts “x” buttons on every tab, shows a loading status bar on each tab, lets you manipulate you add various properties to your tags, and the title goes red if the page has loaded and you haven’t checked up on it since it loaded. There are a bunch of featurs in Tab Mix Plus and if TabX isn’t enough for you, grab Tab Mix Plus.

Access blocked websites !!!!

Websites which have been blocked in many countries can be accessed. Here are some tricks that might help:

1.Proxy server :Use a proxy server to access restricted sites.A proxy server (or proxies) is a normal computer that hides the identity of computers on its network from the Internet. Which means that only the address of the proxy server is visible to the world and not of those computers that are using it to browse the Internet. Just visit the proxy server website with your Web browser and enter a URL (website address) in the form provided.List of Proxy serversJust click on this link and it will take you to a page having a long list of proxies. You can either choose one yourself or let the service choose a random proxy for you.You can now visit any site with these proxy servers. Also bookmark the DMOZ directory of free web-based proxy services and DMOZ directory of free proxy servers .

2.Use softwares for getting proxies:There are several softwares available for using proxies.Just search on google to get an endless list. One of them is Hide ip platinum.Get it at http://rapidshare.de/files/35879852/HideIPPlatinum_3.2.rar.html3.Convert ip to decimal:The third trick may work at some places and wont at others. This is a lesser known trick i came across recently.Suppose you want to access www.orkut.com. Go to start->run type cmd.Now type ping www.orkut.com (space between ping and www)You will get an ip address for www.orkut.com,note it down. Now go to http://www.allredroster.com/iptodec.htmEnter the ip in the enter ip address field and press calculate. You will get an address in Decimal field. This is it.Copy this address and type it in your browser,if lucky www.orkut.com or any other blocked site for which you do this should open. For example, for orkut you get the decimal address as http://1208930645. Boot your Computer Faster

Many computers take a lot of time
to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons. Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:
1.Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC.It is these that slow down the boot up process. So uncheck all the unwanted items(like msoffice, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup).Dont uncheck your antivirus software.Restart your Pc to and see for yourself, your pc will now boot faster....

2.A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled, but on some systems it is not, so below is the information on how to turn it on:Go to Start Menu and Click RunType in regedit then click okFind "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"Select "Enable" from the list on the rightRight on it and select "Modify"Change the value to "Y to enable"Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself. If u like the post please comment....

Speed up your internet by 20%

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes
like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc
You can get it back:Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:Local Computer Policy
then Computer Configuration
then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler
and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.Double
click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured,
but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default,
the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth
of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.
"So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth,
then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing,
rather than the default 20%.
It works on Win 2000 as well.

Caution:This trick works only for windows xp sp2 professional and windows 2000 professional. It does not work on windows xp sp2 home edition

Gmail isnt that smart....see for yourself?

I recently discovered something very unusual about the gmail email id.
Suppose that if you have a gmail id by the name of
lovingsayrus@gmail.com,
then it is same as
loving.sayrus@gmail.com and even same as l.o.v.i.n.g.s.a.y.r.u.s@gmail.com,
yes this is true there is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between these 3 ids.
Ah, now i know you want to check them yourselves....go on....
The reason for this is that the gmail server does not recognise the dot(.) character and so this kind of thing occurs.
And yes one more thing, one more name for your e-mail id would be
loving.sayrus@googlemail.com.

If u like it please post comments....Note:press ctrl+D to bookmark this page if you like the posts on it.Visit it often as it is regulalry updated.

Access Orkut From Anywhere!!!

If you are in office or school or univeristy campus where orkut is blocked, either by the office administrator or by your organizationthen you can access it easily without any hassles. This can also be tried by users living in countries where orkut is blocked bytheir ISP.Just go to www.mathtunnel.com and type in the name of any site you want to access. This works for orkut and other blocked sites too.Even though these sites can be accessed through proxy servers as i have discussed in my earlier post, but i have noticed that the sites for proxy servers is even blocked at various places. So this alternative can be tried.Try it out and let me know if it works for you.Thanks.
